Woah, this is a big turtle. Can you guess how heavy he is?
The big boy featured here is Newton. He is a common snapping turtle: a freshwater species with amazingly powerful jaws and strong shells. Unfortunately, these have not protected him from becoming caught up in the illegal pet trade.
Newton was found wandering on Serangoon Road, abandoned and suffering from multiple abrasion wounds. Handling a snapping turtle every day for treatment procedures is not an easy task, and the animal care team at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) need to be extremely careful not to get bitten. But, given the discomfort and pain he has been through, Newton has every right to be angry and uncooperative! We’re hoping that Newton can move to a bigger tank soon, once he’s made a full recovery.
In order to continue provide optimal care for all the rescued animals at the AWRC – all victims of the illegal wildlife trade – we need more help and support. If you would like to sponsor our animal/s, please visit http://www.acres.org.sg/support/sponsor.html
