I was e-talking to my spiritual teacher (in Taiping) the other day and the subject of their temple cat came up.
He told me that some of their previous cats tend to run away after sometime. There is a residential housing area nearby so perhaps some of the cats went to live there.
Then, he said the only cat left at the temple now seems to be very homeloving and is not inclined to run away. Apparently, one of the Burmese workers said back in Burma, they believe that by snipping off the whiskers of a kitten (just once when very young), the cat will never run away.
So, this cat had his whiskers snipped when young, and he is very homeloving!
I told my spiritual teacher that the whiskers are very important to a cat because the cat uses it to gauge the size of an opening or hole. If the head can go through without its whiskers touching the perimeter of the opening, it means the whole cat would be able to go through the opening.
That's why we don't see cats getting stuck in any opening or hole. It's dogs that get stuck. Not cats. Smart things that they are....
My teacher assured me it's only done once, when the kitten is first brought to the temple.

The temple cat, with his whiskers.
He eats dana food (don't worry, it's non-vegetarian).
