Muzzling a dog: The muzzle is used by vets when handling a snappy dog, not for dogs out on a walk. The muzzle makes it difficult for the dog to breathe properly and is unnatural and stressful as well. All dogs cool down their body by breathing through their mouth and by muzzling those dogs while out on the leash is not only cruel, it can cause the dog to go into heat stroke and ultimately death.
Banned breeds in Malaysia: There are actually 12 breeds that the DVS has identified as banned breeds sometime in 2002 but many people are still importing those breed under different names. How these dogs got past immigration should be the question we now ask.
Who has the authority? The MPSJ or any local council has NO authority to confiscate any animal from any household. Only the DVS is empowered to do so. All animal owners - please take note of this and know your rights (and your animals' rights!).
A more compassionate alternative: An overhaul of the way dogs are classified should be implemented. The 7 or 12 breeds should taken off the banned list and put into a new “restricted” category. Dogs in the new category would be allowed but there will be additional conditions attached for keeping and licensing. They would have to be kept in an escape-proof enclosure, which could include the inside of a house, outdoor pen or fenced yard. Dogs in the restricted breed group would not be allowed to be tied on the property. Anyone wishing to own a restricted breed must have their property inspected to make sure they meet the requirements before getting the dog.
And a last word on this to the authorities: Please nab the illegal puppy mill operators and rescue those poor dogs out of those hell-holes!
