Why do we encourage adoption and discourage buying pets from pet shops?
1) Animals in pet shops usually come from breeders who breed intensively (2-3 times a year) in bad conditions i.e. cramped cages, no exercise or freedom of movement, no socialization, and limited medical attention. Responsible breeders want to know where their kittens and puppies are going and make an effort to thoroughly interview potential owners, thus very unlikely to sell them to pet shops where people walk in and buy on impulse.
2)When there is an increasing demand for puppies and kittens from pet shops, more will be bred by these irresponsible breeders who only do it for the money and have little or no animal welfare standards. Thus logically, if we reduce the demand, there will be less breeding. Why breed animals when there are already hundreds of thousands of animals on the streets and in animal shelters?
3)Think of it this way. For every animal bought from a pet shop, a shelter animal loses his or her chance of a home – forever.
Is this enough to convince you to adopt your next pet?
