Congratulations to Soi Dog Bangkok and the many volunteers in Bangkok for their tremendous sterilization program in from April (first clinic) until end of the year 2012. The BKK team has successfully done 32 mobile sterilization clinics sterilizing 1,992 animals! (2,239 including dogs sterilized at department of livestock shelters where dogs rescued from the illegal dog meat trade are sheltered).

When Soi Dog opened in Bangkok the focus was and will remain on sterilization of street dogs and cats. Sterilization is the only effective method of addressing the core cause of unnecessary suffering endured by street animals — overpopulation.

With Bangkok being home to an estimated 300,000+ street animals this underscores the importance of the continued expansion of the sterilization program.

On Phuket (where SDF has operated since 2003) the number of sterilizations has been doubled to 10,000 per year. This should see the tipping point of 75% to 80% of Phuket’s street animals sterilized within 24 months. (This tipping point being where significant decreases in population occur and can be maintained).

While Soi Dog intends to continue expansion in Bangkok during this period reaching this tipping point on Phuket will allow for even faster expansion in Bangkok.
