Hi there Kah Yein,
I am writing to apply for medical subsidy for Bushy tail (http://myanimalcare.org/2012/12/08/spaying-subsidy-for-bushy-calico-wong-yoke-meis/) as she got herself into big trouble this morning. As i was feeding my TNRM cats in the front porch this morning, i noticed there were 1 cat missing, Bushy tail. When i shake the kibble container to call for her, there was a far distant meow but still no Bushy tail. So i went out to the road and walk up and down a few houses while shaking the kibble container, but then there wasn’t any meows. So i thought to myself, maybe she got adopted by a neighbour and was kept inside the house. So i went on with my feeding. Then my next door neighbour came calling for me to say that he found a cat inside his car engine. I had a really bad feeling about it, so i went over and to take a look. True enough, it was Bushy tail. I put my hand in and tried to grab her out, but then she was hissing and scratching at me. Then i noticed, something was really really wrong. She was not budging at all except for the hissing and her front paw scratching at whatever that comes near. I went back to take the torchlight and i found that her hind leg was stuck somewhere at the bottom. I quickly ran back and wake my husband from his sweet dreams to help out. After half and hour of putting his head and hands underneath the car, we still weren’t able to help her release her leg. Since i have a smaller hand and arm, i went in and stuff my whole hand inside and felt her leg. Lo and behold, i felt that her lower part of her leg and paws were very very swollen. At that point of time, i thought to myself, will we have to amputate her leg? My auntie neighbour told me she heard the meowing since 3am yesterday night and it’s now 9.00am. That’s a pretty long time. If the blood supply is cut off, that part of the leg could have died by now i thought. All negative thoughts were running through my mind, but we had to keep trying. Then the hubby brought out screwdrivers and the neighbour uncle brought out a torchlight and newspaper so that hubby can lie down on the floor to unscrew the bottom of the car cover. We managed to open up the cover a little with a few nuts and bolts unscrewed, but we still can’t see how the wire were tangled around her leg. So we asked neighbour uncle’s permission to cut off the wire (the car belongs to uncle’s daughter in law and he was pretty reluctant to allow us to cut the wire in the first place). We did just that, and but she was still stuck. I put in my hand and felt for the wire and did a second cut and she was free. When i brought her out, she was covered wet in her own urine. When i put her in the carrier, she could not even stand up. I thought of the worst by then. She must have had the worst moments of her life in there. I had to quickly send her to the vet and save her leg. And there’s only one vet nearby that’s open at 9.30am. Went to the clinic, and we were second in line. Dr checked her out and took an x-ray to see that there were no broken bones, and then did a reflects test and all was still intact. Dr said she has a very swollen leg/paw and is given anti-inflammatory & anti-biotic. Dr’s advise is to cage rest her for 7 days before releasing her.
I hope to be able to apply for the medical subsidy for her treatment today. The vet’s advise is to complete the course of anti inflammatory meds for 3 days, and anti biotic for 7 days. Upon that, the leg should be ok, I am hopeful. The costs for the vet’s consultation, meds and x-ray today was RM100.
Thanks.
Yoke Mei
Waiting for our turn.
She looks so defeated after the ordeal.
Swollen paw that looks like hand clasps.
Get well soon, Bushy Calico!
And thank you, Yoke Mei, for all that you do.
