Snow Storm Hits Cat Sanctuary

It looks as though a white Christmas is a sure-fire guarantee for the residents of Cat Shelter Felix in Serbia, and while the cats are greeting the white stuff with mixed reviews, the sanctuary’s caretaker fears this could be the first in a series of super storms. Some of the cats playing on the patio before the storm hit. “The youngsters are having a great time and loving the snow but most of the older kitties are definitely not impressed,” explains the sanctuary’s founder and full time care-giver Danica Mirkovic, who is trying to enjoy the cats’ antics despite her worries. “Some of them took a brief walk through the snow on that first day and decided they didn’t like it and are now resting in their warm rooms, while the others didn’t even desire to set foot outside. The only exception is Speki, whose fascination with snow is well known, but he won’t be so delighted if the food delivery truck doesn’t manage to push its way through.” Indeed, the snow brings exploration and joy for a few of the cats, but Danica finds herself draped in concern. “A state of emergency has been declared for Vojvodina,” she said. “We’re in the grip of a deep freeze, with continuing snowfall accompanied by frosty, biting and stinging northerly winds. Luckily, this heavy snow can’t pile up on my chain link fence, but the heaps of snow do build up on the rooftop. I guess it’s a good thing that I still don’t hear ominous cracking sounds from the roof as it is successfully holding the burden As part of Operation Holiday Kitty, the Harmony Fund sent funds to Cat Shelter Felix in Serbia last night and a second grant will go out at the end of the month. In fact, funds will be sent to help homeless cats in many cold climates and to shore up shelter space, food and veterinary medicines for small animal rescue teams who rarely dare to dream that help will arrive from far, far away.
