PRESS RELEASE AND INVITE

Candlelight Vigils And Memorial Services For Wen Wen In Singapore, Indonesia, The Philippines And Thailand

SINGAPORE, 30 November 2012 – ACRES will be launching the next phase of the campaign to urge Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) to let the dolphins go, at an event in Singapore this Sunday. Members of the public will be gathering in masses for Candlelight Vigils and Memorial Services for Wen Wen in Singapore, Indonesia (Jakarta), The Philippines (Manila) and Thailand (Bangkok).

Wen Wen, a wild-caught dolphins purchased by RWS, died on a plane on 22 November. He was being transported to Singapore for a new attraction at RWS.

Wen Wen was born in the wild, lived six years free in the wild, and it is tragic that he died in captivity far from home. Wen Wen is the third dolphin to have died under the care of RWS.

On Sunday, members of the public will be gathering to mourn the loss of the dolphins and to show the world and RWS that we care, we will not keep quiet, and will continue to call for the remaining 24 dolphins to be rehabilitated and released back into the wild.

“The vigils and memorial services will ensure that the tragic loss of the dolphins is not forgotten, and remind people about the plight of the 24 surviving dolphins and the need to do all we possibly can to spare them from the same fate. We must not let Resorts World get the idea that they can simply get away with the exploitation of wild animals its tragic consequences” said Mr. Louis Ng, Chief Executive of ACRES.

“The world is screaming to free captive dolphins, Wen Wen became the victim of the ignorant few who won’t listen” said Ms. Femke den Haas, Co-Founder of Jakarta Animal Aid Network.

“We in Thailand mourn the loss of Wen Wen, and are saddened by this incident. Wen Wen’s death, along with that of the two other dolphins, could have been prevented if they were not taken from the wild. We hold this candlelight vigil in hopes of bringing attention to our own dolphin issues here in Thailand and to support ACRES in urging RSW to please let the dolphins go” said Ms. Nancy L. Gibson, Chief Executive of Love Wildlife Foundation.

During the events, members of the public will gather together holding candles to form the shape of a giant leaping dolphin.
