Over the past few years, ACRES has been working on establishing a structured programme to tackle zoo animal welfare issues in Malaysia, involving Malaysian NGOs, the zoo community and the government.
2009 saw the formation of myZOO – a coalition of Malaysian organisations concerned with zoo animal welfare issues- with ACRES and WSPA playing an advisory role.
Earlier this week, we organised a Roundtable Discussion for myZoo members, the government and universities to come together to discuss the next steps forward to ensure improvements to the welfare of zoo animals in Malaysia, following on from the enactment of the Wildlife Conservation (Operation of Zoo) Regulations 2012 – which are a big step in the right direction!
It will take a while to get there, but with the new regulations in place and with zoos, NGOs, universities and government agencies working together to ensure Malaysia’s zoos meet them, Malaysia could soon be leading the way in zoo animal welfare standards in the region and beyond.
