Soi Dog Catchers Take Training

On November 14 to16, Humane Society International (HSI) provided a training workshop on using nets to catch street dogs. The workshop, which was hosted by Soi Dog at its shelter on Phuket, was attended by dog handlers from two other Thai animal welfare organizations as well as Soi Dog’s own animal handlers and other staff. Soham Mukherjee, HSI’s head trainer on humane dog handling and capture, traveled from their Asia headquarters in India to run the workshop. In Thailand, most dog welfare organizations collect street dogs by hand or by using blow darts, but have not received training in other methods. The participants were eager to learn to use nets to collect dogs who let people get close to them but not close enough to catch by hand. Soham taught the group about humane animal handling in general, as well as working in a team to use nets to effectively collect street dogs. The workshop included classroom instruction complemented by practice in the field. HSI generously donated nets to the participating organizations. http://www.hsi.org/
