Many Community Dogs And Cats Have Gone Missing

For the past few weeks, we have received emails from feeders in various parts of the Klang Valley informing us that their community dogs and cats have gone missing. Some streets have been wiped clean of these community animals. Many of these animals are neutered ones too.

Here are three of the emails:

It is so disheartening to see that so many of our dogs that we are feeding are missing. Last week i went to the market car park to feed the strays there. They were so hungry. They finished all the kibbles i kept in the car within mins so i brought more yesterday. To my disappointment only one dog is around. I really wish i got a piece of land or a place i can keep the strays so that they have food and shelter.

Just to let you know, recently I have not sighted the usual cats roaming the usual streets. Dont know whether they are caught or kept indoors. Even the usual 3 strays are not showing up too. Very, very odd. The streets have been empty of cat presence. I only see residents bringing out their dogs for walks in evenings. Mind you, even the cock and his hen have not been roaming the small patch of empty land, but in their cage.
Ever since this fiasco, I also started to notice that the usual stray cats roaming the shops are all but missing…. There used to be many of them loitering around several eateries here, but now I can hardly count them on 1 hand. I do hope they are ok. The same goes for the stray dogs. There used to be a few of them roaming about, but they are gone completely!
Many of our community animals have gone missing recently. The stray dogs that my friends feed are all gone. Even the cats are gone. It is sad because we spent money to spay and neuter them.

If you are a feeder, please find ways to protect your animals. Find them temporary shelter. Get them rehomed (though we understand this is about the hardest thing to do).

If indeed these animals have been caught, we wish the ear-notched animals could have been spared. Ear-notched animals have been neutered and will not breed anymore. Live and let live.

The animal-loving community has always been a minority, and a small one at that.

The key to cultivating compassion in those who do not like the presence of animals is empathy. Just as we hope we can be allowed to live out our lives peacefully without being harmed or killed, so do the animals.

The earth belongs to the animals too.

Please keep your community animals safe, as far as you can.

As I write this, I’m thinking fondly of Bosco. I will never know if Bosco was poisoned or he had some underlying disease. Or it was a bad allergic reaction. I will never know and I have to live with this and find peace in it, somehow. But I know I gave him my best and the best treatment I could get for him. I have to find peace in this.

This morning, a new cat appeared on the road right in front of my gate as I drove back. The cat looked very frightened and was mewing right in the middle of the road. I went in and brought some food in a plastic bowl for it, but it ran off into the drain. It looked lost.

This is the new cat.

He/She reminds me of Bosco. Same size, too. And quite thin too, just as Bosco was when he first appeared in my porch, with eye discharge and mucus from his nose. I’m still quite traumatised by the loss of Bosco, and my initial reaction was, “Oh dear, another one?” Yet, I know if this cat needs help, I’ll have to help.

I quickly checked and Rosie is safe in my compound on her favourite table.

Yesterday evening, Mr G came back (the owner must have released him). And that upset the equilibrium as Rosie and Ginger went missing. I went to search for them and finally managed to get them back late at night and fed them while Mr G watched. A bit of growling from Mr G, but I hope Mr G will share the space with Rosie and Ginger. After all, my garden is big enough for the three of them.

I’ve advised Mr G’s owner to confine him as it is just so unsafe these days to leave your pets roaming freely. We are not living in a kampung where people are more laid back and tolerant. We are living in an urban area where people are very unwilling to share their private space with anyone or anything.

All it takes is ONE neighbour who cannot tolerate the presence of these animals, and many other animals might suffer as a result of this anger, prejudice, intolerance and lack of empathy.

The inability to adopt the “Live and let live, let us agree to disagree peacefully” principle is the cause of many problems in this world, not only between humans and animals, but amongst humans too.

The right to harm and kill just because one is more superior in strength and control is the cause of so much suffering. Humans resort to killing to solve problems. How many times have I encountered angry people threatening to kill another or harm their families over some trivial issue. Animals do not do that. Carnivores only kill for food, not for revenge, jealousy, hatred or greed.

A lion would let a deer pass by if it is not hungry.

It is probably safer and more peaceful in the jungle.

I feel sorry for our species. Truly, I do.
