Spotlight on: Indian Star Tortoise
At the AWRC we look after over 35 Indian star tortoises, all rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. These little tortoises are certainly big on personality!
Here are some interesting facts about these little stars:
Females are generally larger than males, with bumpier shells.
The star-like pattern on their shells looks very pretty, but did you know it plays a very important role in their survival? The pattern actually breaks up the hard lines of the shell, providing them with a nice form of camouflage. This way, predators will walk, slither and fly by without even noticing this little tortoise.
And a final fun fact: Mathematicians believe the shape of the star tortoise shell allows them to easily flip back over if they are knocked onto their backs. Weve seen some of the tortoises we look after doing this!
