Steffie Chong, who is just 19 years old, wrote to me last week, requesting help to neuter a stray dog whom she and her family had taken in from the streets in their neighbourhood in Taman Tun.
Steffie's family has adopted Boy Boy already and he has been with them for 2 months now.
I took off from work to meet Boy Boy at the clinic today, for his neutering.
Boy Boy was quite aggressive and refused to enter the clinic! He knows....
While he was at the clinic, he was also growling non-stop. "What's this hostile place? What are they going to do to me?", he must have wondered.
So, I didn't approach him as I did not want to stress him any further.
I sat at a distance....
Boy Boy with Steffie and her mum, Mrs Chong.
We had to wait as there was another case so I chatted with Mrs Chong.
This is their first pet, so Mrs Chong had lots of questions to ask. I could see she and Steffie really, really care for Boy Boy. They love him so much.
Boy Boy had to be muzzled as he was still growling. But he soon calmed down after the vet hugged him. That's very reassuring...for anyone!
It is normal procedure to explain all the risks involved. The owner must always be aware that with every surgery, there are risks. Mrs Chong was really very worried. This, I understand, as it's her first time having a pet, and one who is undergoing surgery as well. So I assured her I will stay until the surgery is done and I'll inform her once everything is ok.
Oh, by the way, Mrs Chong and Steffie are about the most polite, grateful and courteous people I've ever encountered in the course of doing all this AnimalCare work.
It is a great blessing to encounter such people....especially when some human-owners-rescuers can be so demanding and difficult at times. But at such times, I am reminded by what Amanda's father would say - in order to help the animals, we have to learn to deal with their human-rescuers. It comes in a package....unfortunately!
But the (otherwise routine) surgery was taking too long and I was getting worried, so the helper went upstairs to enquire if everything was ok.
Oh, don't worry...everything's fine. Went beautifully. The vets were just giving Boy Boy a manicure and a pedicure. His nails were too long!
Here's Boy Boy just waking up.
Everything's done now, so I texted Steffie and told her to tell mum not to worry.
The Chongs will take Boy Boy home this evening.
The surgery today is sponsored from our funds, and Mrs Chong expresses her deepest appreciation.
All in a day's work....and now, I have to go back to work!
