ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING! http://www.animalrescuechase.com/rescue_showcase/story.php?id=982

“It seemed like a regular day. We got up cleaned the kennels and had nearly finished when a guy came to our gate and told us that there was a dog chained up and starving. The dog was apparently relatively near to us. When we arrived we saw a shocking sight. The dog was starving and in a bad condition generally with bot flies embedded in his skin all over. He had a huge heavy chain around his neck, no food, and an empty green stained water container. We could see him from a fence. Every bone in his body was visible through his sagging skin.

We summoned the owner and got prepared for a problem. We politely and calmly explained to him that his dog was near death and another two weeks on the end of that chain should just about do it. We asked why he wasn’t eating? to which the owner said that the neighbors chicken steal his food. We glanced at each other knowing full well this was not true; a starving dog wouldn’t give up his food to a chicken. Then after a moments thought he said ‘you can have the dog I don’t want him anyway.’ We refrained from any expression of emotions. If you look too pleased then they may change their minds or put a price on the animals head.

We agreed to pick up the dog the next morning after we made preparations. We had an appointment to attend that day and not a single empty space for him. We gave him the dog food we took with us that he ate ravenously and got him clean water. He looked sad as we left he obviously never understood that we were coming back for him in less than twenty four hours.

I kept thinking about Oscar and how he had spent his entire life with a heavy chain around his neck. A young dog although I didn’t know at the time because he looked so run down and beaten who had never run or played, never enjoyed affection. The family could see him from their dining room window and could observe him starving as they ate their meals.

When we let him into our play area he went crazy running back and forwards. It was a heart warming sight knowing that he had probably never ran free before. He ate well and gained weight and had to have eye surgery to correct ingrown eye lashes that hid irritated him since birth. He plays like a puppy now and is reliving his youth. He is the most affectionate and forgiving dog. Dogs mostly do forgive humans for the cruelty. This never ceases to amaze me. He now shares his kennel with Sol an abandoned street dog. They make an odd couple. He is big and she is tiny and fat. They play like two puppies and he has a beautiful smile now.”

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
