Passing It On(a Heart-Warming Story)

I’d like to share a delightful email from Toh Han Shen (I think he should be 13 this year). Han Shen started writing to me after his aunt brought home one of my first books. From then on, he has been interested in helping animals and once, he and his school friends rescued a kitten at school.

Below is his email. Previously, I had requested a friend to drop mybooks at his house, but this time, I’ve checked – It wasn’t my friend who dropped the latest books in Han Shen’s house. I wonder who it is….but isn’t it a very nice gesture?

Passing it on…

I’ve told Han Shen he is most welcomed to have more books to share with his school friends, and that there must be a mysterious good samaritan around…somewhere! Thank you, kind sir/madam!

From Han Shen:

Hi, i would like to thank you a lot for the latest book you wrote. I feel a bit like the book is charmed because it’s purposely sent to me by you- Chan Kah Yein Ph.D. I immediately read the book on the day it was sent to me which was last Sunday. I was so happy that there was a whole packet for distribution. I feel that very kind of you. After reading the book, i felt more like saving animals. The chinese words are quite of use because i have friends who would be interested in the book that speak chinese. Anyway, really, thanks for the book.

I’m sorry that your 16 year-old Bobby passed on. The note that was in the book told me. It is already considered very good for Bobby to have lived for 16 years. That’s very long life for a dog. Bobby had been nice to everyone in the family. It is sure sad to see him go, but death is something every living thing must face. We must bot grieve too long over death, just live on peacefully. I really hope Bobby went peacefully to somewhere than this world.
Please help me say thanks to your friend who sent the book for me.(It wasn’t my friend, and it wasn’t me, so we cannot take credit for this. It is someone else!)
If i need more books i will certainly tell because my cousin is a real animal lover. Goes playing with stray cats and dogs in her alley in Ipoh. I will give her a book or lend her to read how to care for animals and understand about them. It would be very worth for my cousin to read this book.
I’m also here to tell you about my interest in plants and nature. I really love plants and nature. I started to love nature since born ( i think ), and started growing plants since 9. To my friends, my hobby is all nonsence and funny weird, but to me it is wonderful. When i was a baby, i wake up early and beg my father to bring me to see the flowers in the street. My father would bring me out with panda-eyes to see flowers. And when the garbage truck comes, he runs as fast as possibe back into the house and slams the door and closes the window. The way my aunt told me this was so funny.
At the age of 9, i started to grow beans and succeeded reproducing green beans. Then my interest grew bigger and bigger. By 10, i started to grow harder plants like corn, onion, ginger….. By 11 i started growing advanced plants like paddy ( rice ), tomato, wu lou ( a feng shui gourd ), and soya…… i kept this advanced hobby until now.
I can send several pictures of my paddy, tomato, corn and soya bean:
i think this much would be enough, i just send these photos so that i can share my interesting or rather weird and funny hobby to others. Hope you enjoy.
with metta,
Han Shen
