Further Updates On The Puppy With The Inverted Rear Paws (Kelly Tans)

This post is entirely written in my layperson’s understanding of what I have found out. Any error is deeply regretted and there is absolutely no intention to undermine anyone’s offer to help.

Kelly’s vet has explained that there is an over-extension of the knee on both legs, thus causing the legs to bend in a direction it is not supposed to. The surgery that he plans to do would be to break the bone at the knee and bend the leg back into the correct position, securing it with metal plates.

From my very lay understanding, this procedure is similar to something called ankylosis. I’ve checked and the vet says there are many types of ankylosis and his procedure could be classified as such.

I have also consulted other vets in the Klang Valley and depending on a physical examination of the puppy, there is a possibility that non-surgical methods may be able to address this problem, provided certain conditions of the leg permit these methods to be carried out. Based on the photographs, it may not be a bone problem, but one of the soft tissues (ligaments).

I have conveyed this to Kelly and we will leave it to Kelly to decide on what she prefers for the puppy. Kelly is keen to seek a second opinion from any vet in the Klang Valley who might be willing to see this case. However, she needs transport to and from Ipoh on a weekday. If anyone is able to provide this transport, please contact me at chankahyein@gmail.com. Kelly is not able to use email as she is not IT-savvy.

From my understanding, this case is urgent. If the deformity is not corrected fast enough, the knee or ligaments will harden into their present position and corrective treatment later will be more difficult. We hope Kelly will explore non-surgical methods since there is a possibility for this.

Please hold on to your donations as we will not be starting any collection until Kelly decides what she plans to do.

Thank you.
