This semester, I am following up with my last semester's students in the Engineering programme.
Two days ago, Bavani, my only female student, was telling me all about her experience as a zoo-keeper with Zoo Negara. She had been a volunteer for 3 years and it's been so exciting for her.
Apparently, it's a very educational programme and absolutely hands-on. The volunteers go into the enclosures with the vet and are taught and allowed to do many interesting things for the animals. Bavani has handled tigers, lions, leopard and she even feeds the snakes!
She's not afraid...
She says the boas are so lazy, you'd just have to open their mouths and put the food in. And sometimes they coil their bodies around your arm so tight, it takes two people to pull the snake away. And Bavani says you have to know how to pull the tail because doing it too tightly would cause the snake to gag.
Gee....did you know this?
Bavani says she enjoyed the three years so much and have applied to go back as a volunteer now.
And folks....Bavani is a very petite girl....she's shorter and smaller in size than me.
That's Bavani, doing mathematics in my class. She's going to be a mechanical engineer when she graduates.
I wish I was as brave as she is. I would love the lions, tigers and leopards, but snakes?
By the way, recently, a new vet joined one of our panel clinics and she specialises in exotic animals. She too can handle snakes....
So brave....!
