Koo brought Winnie's mum to our panel vet today, for a check-up and deworming.  Today's treatment was sponsored by Koo - thank you!

Winnie's mum is named Goldie.

From Koo:

Dear Dr Chan,

Please find some pictures of Goldie & Winnie:

Winnie sleeping in my lap after the vet visit on last Friday. She couldn't sleep alone without her mom whom we haven't rescued yet at that moment. Since the vet said that Winnie needs a warm body to cuddle against, I would had to get a hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket to simulate that.

I regularly check on Winnie to make sure she's ok but last Sunday, she disappeared from sight and I just couldn't find her. I frantically looked all over when suddenly I heard a faint rustle under the shoe rack which I thought I've searched earlier. So, I got my head down to the floor and there she was; at the bottom of the shoe rack. She was so soundly asleep that I decided not to disturb her. I think she's missing her container home but she's not old enough to know just how lucky she is that she got out of there....

Winnie happily reunited with Goldie, her loving mom who's very loving and protective of her only surviving baby pup. Luckily, Goldie already trusted me enough to let me handle her baby pup and her too!

Winnie needed her mother's milk and I needed to get Goldie to eat and drink to generate more milk for her baby. For the first 2 days, I couldn't get Goldie to eat or drink; just a few kibbles and some sips of water. Then, I thought of something: all dogs must love milk and true enough, when I made 2 cups full of pet-grade milk, she slurped it all dry.

This is a pic of Goldie while she's walking. Her thick bushy tail would wave hypnotically while she walks. As you can see, her body colouring is like a koi fish. When I take her for walks, there is no tell-tale feral-type signs of pulling away from me to escape; she just walks obediently beside me while waving her tail high (a very good sign indicating acceptance and confidence) and occasionally looking up at me for reassurance.

Goldie getting a thorough check-up from the vet. She was initially muzzled in case she was still be jittery (she wasn't). I had to rush her to the vet because I saw her rubbing her bottom against the floor yesterday which I knew was a sign of worms. I didn't want the worms taking any more of the food nutrition which is very much needed to make the essential mother milk. In addition, the vet's weighing machine shows that she was certainly underweight at only 17kg. But miraculously, those were the only worrying (but easily remedied) problems. The good news is that she's actually healthy in every other aspect. Her teeth was relatively free from tartar, her long and thick fur looks and feels good, there wasn't any ticks found (I did bath her with flea shampoo yesterday). Goldie also did not give any negative reaction (baring teeth, growling or whimpering) when the vet released her muzzle, checked her teeth, open her mouth to feed her de-worming tablets and cleaned her ears.

I asked the vet whether applying the 'Frontline Spot On' on Goldie could endanger Winnie in any way and fortunately, there's no problem. The vet estimated Goldie's age at just 2-3 years old after checking her teeth. I'll need to bring Goldie in again after another week for vaccination. Maybe, after a month, she can be spayed depending on whether she's still producing milk for Winnie. Winnie can be also be spayed when she's about 6 months old.

The vet also felt that Goldie's calm and friendly temperament would help get her easily adopted in addition to her beautiful looks. When I also brought her to MDDB yesterday, Wani gave the same appraisal. What an amazing transformation after just one weekend when everybody thought that it would take months to domesticate her. I can already feed her by hand and she would wag her tail and jump up when she sees me returning from work. So, I'm truly amazed that her horrible life experience did not seemed to scar her much, physically or mentally but I've no doubt that she had guardian angels, divine and human, watching over her. Now I hope that her past would inspire someone to adopt her as she would excel as a guard and companion dog.

Best regards,
Koo

Great work, Koo!  Kudos to you for following up after the rescue.  Winnie and Goldie are certainly in very good hands now.  Imagine their fate had MPS reached them first....

Complainants report, councils catch-and-kill.  We're trying so hard to institute change for the long-term.  Won't you consider it?  CNRM, please.  We'll help you with the spay-neuter fees.
