Hi Dr Chan.

Two things to update:

1) I’ve confirmed that this dog in this post has been adopted by the kind lady in the neighbourhood:http://myanimalcare.org/2012/04/07/did-you-lose-your-dog-in-tanjong-bungah-mah-chun-hueys/

Which also leads to the second update…
2) On the pregnant dog in this post:http://myanimalcare.org/2012/08/23/help-needed-for-dog-in-tg-tokong-penang-mah-chun-hueys/
I got to chat with the kind lady 2-3 weeks ago and found out that this pregnant dog loves to hang out in front of her house. I asked if she would like to adopt her but she said she can no longer cope with another dog – she already has 2 dogs at home, has some sickness herself and has to take care of an alzheimer family member + work. I gave her my number and asked her to give me a call in case anything happen to the pregnant dog or if she needs help. She called me today and told me that she thinks the dog has delivered but the puppies didn’t make it, because the dog is still hanging out in front of her house at late nights for long hours – which is rare for new mother dogs. She said she can help to trap the dog by making friends with her and luring her into her compound (as the dog loves to play with her dogs). She asked if I could help to send to a shelter or get someone to adopt her because her not-so-understanding neighbours have been threatening to kill her own dogs because they happen to pee around the area. They are also not happy that the dog is hanging out in front of her house and although she doesn’t feed her (someone else does) it seems like she does. The lady did say that she’ll be willing to adopt the dog back if any one of her dogs passed away but of course at this moment we don’t know when that will be.

I have several options now and have actually started making contacts and connections to see what is best for the situation.
a) Trap the dog with help from the lady and send to a private shelter. For this, I’ll need a cage for a medium-sized dog as the rescuer running the shelter has requested to provide a cage along. I’ve asked a local pet supply shop for a used one or something more affordable (I was told a new one for that size will cost about RM300 or more, something I can’t really afford at this moment). If any of your readers have a spare one, I’d be happy to pick up too.

b) I’m also making contacts with another private shelter through the owner of the pet supply shop, which may not need cage and last I heard, is quite well-maintained. I’m now waiting to see if anything can be done through this channel, though if successful, a cage might still be needed temporarily to transport the dog. In both cases, I’ll be able to pay or raise enough to pay for the monthly dog food and medical needs for the dog.

c) Find an adopter for the dog. Best thing that could happen, although I do know that this is quite impossible in Penang at the moment. This dog is pretty sweet looking and she doesn’t create much problem, given the fact that she’s a stray. She prefers minding her own business and I believe she’ll be a loyal one-owner dog once the adopter get to build the bond and trust with her. The kind lady can still work on trapping her and then the adopter can pick her up.

While I wait for updates from contacts that I’ve made to see what can be done, do you think it’s also OK to publish on your blog? I’d very much love to get the dog adopted, if possible.

Thanks!

- Huey
