Shamiela is one of the few people who have responded to my invitation to participate in CNRM in Subang Jaya.

While I have been talking with vets and trying my best to get more information, working out the best deal (for both the humans and the animals), etc., I can only hope that the news will spread and more people will come forward to participate in CNRM in ways that they can.

Shamiela tells me what it is like on her street, in SS19:

To your question on whether the people in this area calls the MPSJ to catch the cats - YES. My husband said one day last year one of our neighbour on the opposite side where all the cats reside behind the house complained and MPSJ came to catch them. However they couldnt catch all. Since then I have seen them on and off. However after sending you the email, I went to check this morning and saw the whole stretch of the backlane was cleared of cats - i was shocked because didnt realise that MPSJ came and caught again. Thank GOD the cats I am taking care are always under my drain or around my street area and they escape. Just now I only saw about two kittens around 6 months old.

I have buried countless cats because of people poisoining them. Even after I have talked to them, they still dont care. There are people who see me feeding the stray cats have come and complained to me that the cats are going and shitting in their area or sitting on their car or disturbing their plants. So I ask them this question - why do you think the cats have become strays? They cannot answer me. I told them they are GOD's creation and they also have a right to live in this world. If they have someone to adopt them, I am open to ideas. After that totally no response.

Looks like there are now no cats to catch to do your programme Dr. Chan. Sorry about that cos the last I saw there were so many cats and all giving births non stop. I could only do so much. Even kittens they take and throw in the drain and kill it. Thats how heartless these people are even though I have explained to them.

And more...

I am going to try to make the effort to find them home quickly. What I did the last time was while the kittens were 1 month old, I put out feeders and I managed to find people. Unfortunately there were at one time 6 kittens/cats died one after another and when I took them to the vet, the vet told me they had been poisoned and nothing can be done to save them. However I will look out for any cats / kittens that might have strayed or abandoned.

Yes please go ahead and blog because people need to know that spaying/neutering is the best way. Cos not only are they being poisoined or being caught by MPSJ, people just drive over them. When they drive and when see cats/kittens crossing, they dont stop, they accelerate thinking that it is their right of the way and the cats must move. Sometimes the cats managed to escape however some gets frozen in place and dont move quickly enough and the cars just run over them. In this instance I have written to MPSJ to raise the hump in my street so that they must slow down - the hump is too small.

Yes I am happy to participate, sometimes I see children going around tormenting the cats/kittens by catching them and throwing them into the drain (a big drain), parents are there but dont even bother to reprimand them. I have intervened and complained to the parents and they would just look at me like I am weird and their thinking is why should I care what happens to strays. I feel educating them is the best approach and this must be filtered through the schooling system as now people tend to forget the moral and civic duties around them.

Shall we all put our heads (and hearts) together and think of ways on how we can help these poor strays?

It's the humans - how can we reduce their intolerance towards the presence of stray animals?

That is the key question, isn't it?

If only they are more tolerant and accepting, they will not harm and kill.  They will not complain.
