So far, we have sold 7 packets of catnip seeds, which is not bad for one day!
For those who need some tips, here’s how Chen did it:
Hi KY,
When I say just taruh, it’s for real. I did not even use a pot. See the pic attached. Me, being the cheapskate about wastage, took 2 empty clean bath wash refill plastic (because they just happen to be there in my plastic recycling pile) – cut it short and made a few holes at the bottom with a paper-punch hole. Filled it with some normal but good potting soil (Baba’s selling one at about RM10). Poke some small shallow holes, and sprinkle some seeds into the holes, cover lightly with soil, and just left these 2 fellas out in the garden. Just water everyday and ignore them otherwise. The babies will come out eventually. Patience.
This is definitely not in the best practise category, and you may get less baby plants, but hey it works for me – I’m just a casual gardener. The baby plants in the picture comes in many sizes because I’m too lazy to take them out and shift them into their own individual pots. I need to do this SOON or else they’ll get starved of space and nutrients. So I keep reminding myself :p
More important – because we get a lot of rain, make sure the seeds or baby plants do not drown - so over-watering is more likely to kill them. Good drainage is vital. I’m speaking from experience because I have killed many this way.
And they don’t need to be transplanted into the ground. These plants grow excellently in small pots. So if you have a sunny window, put them by the window edges and water regularly. I’ve grown them in big pots and they died faster because the soil gets too wet and the roots rotted. I have also killed many this way too.
And don’t wait for them to flower – they have nice flowers, but by then they are OLD and this means that they’ll die out soon. Before this happens, please cut them, harvest the leaves for the cats or for tea, then stick the stem into a pot of soil to grow another new plant. Just make sure you stick the correct end of the stem into the soil.
That’s all for growing the catmint seeds – it’s not the best practise method – but good enough for me. Maybe you want to try?
