Amber was a street dog in Ara Damansara, and she had come right up to Krystal Teoh's gate, wagging her tail, as though asking to be helped. Krystal noticed that Amber had a dropped and "half-eaten" vulva, and she contacted me to request help for Amber.
Amber was brought in for a check-up and found to have advanced TVT (Transmittable Venereal Tumour), a cancer of the private part, not uncommon amongst street animals. TVT spreads through contact; it is not airborne.
As serious as it sounds, TVT is one of the most treatable cancers in dogs, and the treatment is chemotherapy injections, administered every week until there is significant shrinkage of the tumour.
Previously, we have treated two TVT dogs, namely Tara and Sweetie, and both have recovered beautifully. Tara is adopted and Sweetie lives on Meiji's farm and is thriving. We have also sponsored the TVT treatment of another male street dog from Old Klang Road.
As Krystal could not foster Amber, we raised extra funds (through the efforts of Mary) to cover boarding for Amber while undergoing treatment. AnimalCare's offer of subsidised medical treatment cannot cover unnecessary boarding (or else, our funds will run dry in no time!). Amber has also been spayed and vaccinated.
Amber was given four chemotherapy injections, boarded for 27 days, and is now discharged. The vet has advised that she be monitored for a few weeks to ensure that there is no relapse of the tumour. The vet has also advised that Amber can be rehomed and as she has already been spayed, there is little chance of the TVT spreading as it is only transmitted through contact. As with all cancers, there is no such thing as "total recovery".
We are now looking for a good home for Amber. If you would like to adopt her, please contact Krystal on 016-2292625.
Amber is extremely friendly and is the happiest dog I've ever met all my life. Even the vet and all the assistants at the clinic attested to that.
She would make a wonderful and playful (!) companion!
Please help Amber look for a home.
