The Sullivan Family, c/o The Irish Embassy
As founder of AnimalCare Society Petaling, I write to appeal for clemency, mercy and forgiveness for the four dogs who are to be euthanised in the case of the unfortunate demise of Mr Maurice Sullivan. Mr Sullivan's death has been truly unfortunate and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
The death sentence, in some countries, is meant as a deterrent to would-be human law-breakers because they are expected to understand that those who indulge in heinous crimes will be severely punished. Dogs do not have the capacity to understand this, so we do not see the relevance of punishing them for this. Moreover, two of the dogs are not even involved in the accident at all. Why are they also sentenced to be put down? The other two dogs who are supposedly involved in the attack, were probably only doing their duty, to protect their territory, which is an instinctive nature of guard dogs.
Forgiveness and compassion are virtues, which, if practised by humans, would lead to a better world for all of us. "An eye for an eye" will make the whole world blind, as proven in cases of much human suffering resulting from acts of revenge by humans on fellow-humans, often masqueraded as calls for "justice".
Killing these dogs will not bring Mr Sullivan back to life, but sparing their lives, will be a shining example to the whole world, that we humans are capable of practising sublime and wholesome virtues, and that we understand that animals do not know any better, therefore, we forgive them.
I appeal to you now, on behalf of many, many animal lovers in this country and around the world, to please spare the lives of these 4 dogs.
Killing is never a solution to any problem.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely, Dr Chan Kah Yein Founder AnimalCare Society Petaling, Selangor
