Subject: kitten and mummy cat rescue – need some advice
To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>

Hi Dr Chan,

Last Friday I rescue a kitten however i only manage to rescue his mother today. I put both of them in a cage this morning. earlier she hisses once at the kitten then keep quite. but she did not try to lick or sniff the kitten.
but after i got back from doing my errands, she hisses at me and hisses at the kitten even more. she also refused to eat any kibble or the fish that i boiled.
this is my first attempt at rescuing kitten. when i took the kitten, i could not find the mother and the kitten was sitting alone in the middle of a mamak restaurant. i took him because i was worried that someone might step on the kitten since it was a busy morning. i tried looking around for his mother everyday but only today i saw her again. but now i was worried if the mother could not recognize the kitten anymore.
so do i still leave them in the same cage or remove the kitten? or could it be that the mother is too stressed out being kept in a cage? but if i let her roam free, wouldn’t she run away from home? i do have 2 male cats and 1 female cat staying with me, plus a few other cats and dogs who like to hang out in my compound.
if she still refuse to eat, can i send her to be spayed before returning her to the mamak restaurant?
could u share with me too on what is the best practice in rescuing kittens and do i return the kittens to the street if no one adopted them? how long should i foster them?
thanks in advance for your advice.

Updates on 13th July 2012:
Hi Dr Chan,

I’ve sent the mother to be spayed this morning. after the surgery she started eating some kibble and drink some water. a good progress compared to yesterday. I will foster her till her suture are healed and will try to ask around if anyone could adopt her. i think she is capable to adapt to having a permanent home.
