Have you ever felt a cats tongue before? Is it wet and slippery like a dogs? Does it feel smooth? In fact, it is quite the opposite. A cats tongue is rough to touch and it feels almost like sandpaper.
A cats tongue has various functions. Like most tongues, it is used for guiding food into the mouth and throat, assist in chewing and swallowing of food. It is also very flexible and serves as a ladle for lapping water and other liquids into the mouth when a cat drinks.
One very special function of a cats tongue is grooming. A cats tongue is essential for it to groom itself and its kittens. It has special hair-like growths on it called papillae which points towards the back of the cats mouth. These hooked hair-like growths are very strong because they are made of keratin, the same component found in human fingernails.
With the help of their tongues, cats are able to clean and groom themselves and thus do not require regular baths.
However, please remember that if you have a cat with a long fur coat, it needs to be groomed daily.Source: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150925388523155&set=a.283797778154.142068.262947298154&type=1&relevant_count=1
