Christine, a student, was on the phone with me all night. She was trying to rescue a little kitten that was injured. Long story cut short, after midnight, she managed to get the kitten.
The kitten was brought to our panel vet this morning and it's not good news....
The kitten, estimated to be about two-and-a-half months old, has a bad injury on the leg. The wound is already full of pus now. This injury can either be treated or the leg can be amputated.
The kitten is very anaemic.
But worst of all, the kitten probably has diaphragmatic hernia, because when the vet pressed her abdomen, it was almost empty (which suggests the intestines, etc has gone into the lung cavity). The kitten also has breathing difficulties.
If it is diaphragmatic hernia, any surgery would be a risk.
The prognosis is not good and the vet said euthanasia is an option.
(But even for Bushytail and Toby, euthanasia was an option.)
I offered our assistance if Christine decides to treat the kitten but if she decides to euthanise, we cannot pay for that. Christine has to decide because she is the rescuer.
Poor Christine was in tears. I understand how hard it must be. She's taken so much trouble and made the effort to rescue the kitten and she had even found an adopter for her last night. But now, the prognosis is so bad, I don't think the adopter might want the kitten anymore, because after surgery, special care would be needed.
I gave Christine time to think it over but let's please make a decision soon.
So, Christine called back and said she would want to treat the kitten but she can't look after her after the surgery.
One step at a time then. We'll get the kitten treated in the best possible way. The prognosis is bad, and the chances are slim, especially on such a young kitten, but we'll leave it to our vet to do everything possible. And if anyone can offer spiritual help, we'll definitely need that as well.
Meanwhile, we urgently need a fosterer for the kitten.
Please write to me at chankahyein@gmail.com if you can help foster the kitten after surgery.

Thank you.
