What To Do If You Find Abandoned Little Puppies Or Kittens

Do NOT panic. Panicking means you're just making a lot of noise and doing nothing.WATCH AND WAIT to see whether there's a parent around! Do NOT remove them immediately if they're not in any danger because the mother may get frightened off and you'll have caused them to become motherless. If the eyes are already opened and they can stand and walk about on their own, that's a good thing because there's a high possibility that they can eat on their own.If the eyes are not opened yet but their bellies are round and they're not crying, then that's a good sign too because that means you have time to arrange for a cage / box and to learn how to feed them.Puppies (except for those from really small breeds like chihuahuas) can usually bebottled fed easily with human baby sized teats. Aim for a few ml of milk every 3 to 4 hours in the beginning rather than just 1 big feeding a day. As they get bigger and stabilize, you can increase the amount each time but decrease the number of times toaround 3 times a day.Kittens are a little more difficult because of the size of their mouths so you'll need bottles with small teats which you can easily find at most petshops. From experience, it's easier to have the puppy or kitten stand on its rear feet with its head and upper back supported by your palm when feeding. The front legs will be resting on the palm of the hand holding the milk bottle. Some prefer to have the puppy or kitten on all four legs but this means that the neck angle will be a bit steep as the bottle will have to be tilted accordingly. Try NOT to have the puppy or kitten upside down like a human baby because it may not be able to stop the flow of milk down its throat when it's had enough and choke. When standing on its hind legs, when it's had enough, it'll usually turn away or push the bottle with its front legs so it's easy to tell plus there's less chances of it choking. If you only have one puppy or kitten, then you'll need to dip your finger or if you're squeamish about the idea, a bit of cotton wool / tissue soaked in warm water and rub around the genitals to stimulate them to defecate or urinate. The mothers usually do this by licking AND eating whatever their babies give out. It's to clean the nesting area and their babies clean. Also possibly to reduce the amount of waste matter around the nesting area so that predators will not be attracted there. If you have more than one, there's a good chance that all that squirming around plus their natural tendency to lick and suckle onto each other will do the stimulating although that also means that the nesting box will get dirty often so it's still advisable to stimulate them after each feeding.Keep them warm and clean! This is important.Bringing up a small animal which would have died without your help is a very rewarding and enriching experience. Try to do your best for those which would have died if no one had cared.
