Medical Subsidy For Terry, Heartworm Patient (Jennifer SL Leongs)
We have subsidised RM300 for the heartworm treatment for Terry, Jennifer Leong’s rescued dog.
Jennifer is also raising funds for Terry and her other rescues through the sales of her cookies. Her other rescued dog, Shiloh, has also been diagnosed with heartworm.
Photo of Terry, when he returned from the clinic after the heartworm treatment, still a little dazed.
Updates after 4 days:

Dear Dr Chan
Today is the 4th day of Terry’s heartworm post treatment. He is up
and running again though he is not encouraged to. I was supposed to
confine him in the bedroom to lessen the hyper activeness in him but I
cannot due to the cookies order. Terry’s appetite is back to normal,
as greedy as ever
I am still checking out on more information on the heartworm treatment
because Shiloh will go in next. The below is exactly what Terry has
gone through.
‘Fast-Kill Method: Treatment for low and normal heartworm positive
dogs consists of two injections, normally given over a period of two
days. The dog stays overnight, receives the second injection on day
two and can go home that afternoon. The recovery period is normally
4-6 weeks.’
As for Shiloh, he will be following the below steps.
‘Prior to treatment, the dogs heart is x-rayed and if needed,
additional blood work done. All dogs are started on a regiment of
Doxycycline for a MINIMUM of 2 weeks. For dogs that are heavy
heartworm positive, that could easily increase to 30 days with the
addition of the medication Prednisone to help with any inflammation
that may be present in the heart or lungs. Slow-Kill Method: For dogs
that test high heartworm positive (evidence of a heavy load of female
worms), the dog is given two or three injections one month apart which
will result in a longer recovery period. The activity level of the dog
that is treated by the slow-kill method (2-3 injections/1 month
apart) must be restricted during the full course of treatment. A
small percentage of dogs do have complications such as going in to
congestive heart and some do not survive the treatment. The total
recover period is normally 3-4 months.’
Here is the link for a more detailed heartworm treatment that I had
found online and you may wish to share this out on my blogsite because
I find that these days, heartworm disease is so common in rescued
dogs. http://www.austindog.org/adoption/hot-topics/564-adopt-heartworms.html
Thank you again for all that you have done for us and the dogs.
