And here is another lovely sharing by Dr Veeranoot. It goes to show that wherever we are, there are always opportunities to perform an act of kindness. And remember, maybe we cannot change the world by saving one animal, but we can certainly change the whole world for that one animal whom we save.
Mabuhay’s whole world was changed the day Dr Veeranoot crossed her path. Read on and be inspired!
Dear Sis Chan,
Thank you very much for allowing me to share this beautiful and
unforgettable story of my one week stays in Manila. Since I have
wholeheartedly joined your AnimalCare Fan Club for the past 3 years, I
make a point that wherever I go either the near vicinity in Malaysia
or else oversea, at least 1-2 Kg of dry foods and plastic containers
will be included in my luggage.
I happened to participate in the 5th ASEAN Congress of Tropical
Medicine and Parasitology in Manila, the Philippines, 15-17 May, 2012
which will be rotated once in two years from one to another SEA
neighboring countries.
Late evening on 15 May, 2012: This incidence was taken place on the
second day of my stay in Manila. I met Mabuhay at the second spot on
the road side while I was walking with my postgrade students back to
the hotel where we stayed. I place 2 plastic containers: one with dry
foods and the other with clean water. While she was eating the
kibbles, I carefully examined her body which showed old scar mark
around her body and a fresh superficial wound due to burn from hot oil
and it was also confirmed by a vet after few days. I was worried about
the chance of secondary bacterial infection. Furthermore, she is
pregnant! It is clearly shown that she was in need of medication but
How and Where? I made enquiries on whereabouts of vet clinic from both
hotel and hospital for humans but there was no accurate answer. I was
back to my room since it was night time and I suddenly remembered that
I did ask my sister to buy some drugs from Thailand for community cats
in Pantai area and it is in my luggage!
16 May, 2012: While feeding her with antibiotic (cephalosporin group,
safe for pregnant cat) and vetri-DMG (brought along from KL) in wet
food and later dressing her wound, I try to ask people around there
about her history but there was communication breakdown. After
finished feeding, I placed 2 plastic containers of dry food and water
for her before I dashed off for my work.
17 May, 2012: 2nd day of her medication and dressing, I met a lady and
came to know that her old scar marks were due to accident few months
ago. However, she could not tell where the vet clinic is. I was told
by local who attending the same conference that the vet clinic is
located in Robinson department store, I went there and make an enquiry
but to no avail…
18 May, 2012: 3rd of her medication and dressing, I took a courage to
ask a nearby Photostat shop owner (Erwin) to continue looking after
her till her wound completely healed, once I left Manila on 20th May.
I was delighted that he agreed and I passed him few bags of dry foods.
He also could not tell me on whereabouts of the vet clinic.
19 May, 2012: This was the 4th day of her medication and considered a
crucial day, Erwin then told me that the vet clinic is actually just
few roads away. On the way to visit my Filipino friend (Tina)’s
university in Cavite, I was very happy when Tina said that she has 4
cats and 2 dogs at home. I then told her about Mabuhay’s story, Tina
instantly agrees to look after her and after we came back to Manila,
we quickly took Mabuhay to the vet clinic for further medication.
20th May, 2012: I left Manila with a sense of relief and joy that
Mabuhay is no longer a lonely girl on the roadside but she is now in a
safe and loving hand of my friend.
22 May, 2012: I shed tears of joy when Tina wrote to me that her wound
is healing well and her friend agrees to adopt her with 1-2 of her
kittens once she delivered and later spayed. Mabuhay and her future
kittens will stay in the farm.
25 May, 2012: Tina took Mabuhay to the vet for follow-up.
I learned from this incidence that 1. Do not easily give up even
though I have to be there all alone from start till end, 2. Do
stand/speak up for stray animals if any opportunity arises and last
but most importantly, save one’s life be it HUMAN or ANIMAL is beyond
words can describe…Thank you Mabuhay…my dear Filipino daughter!!!
