Educating For The Change Of Mindset

Ref:http://myanimalcare.org/2012/05/12/our-education-fund/

We launched our Education Fund on 12th May 2012 and its purpose is to produce and provide free educational materials on kindness to animals to the general public.

While there is the continuous need for shelters, sanctuaries and medical funds for the animals, there is also an equally important need for education, because it is through education that the mindset of people can be changed. This will in turn increase the population of people who practise compassion towards animals.

Just today, I received an email from a friend from another state. Apparently, an animal-hater had written in to their local council asking the authorities to capture a large number of stray dogs in his vicinity because he “hates them”. For this particular case, even if animal groups in that area rally around and remove these dogs before the councils capture them, after sometime, other dogs will migrate in, and the animal-hater will complain again. There will be no end to the problem.

Two possible ways to solve this problem would be
(1) Massive CNRM to control the population of the strays which is what we are pushing for, but this will take time. Yet, it can be done as proven in Singapore where within a few years, certain housing estates could already declare “100% neutered community animals” within their neighbourhood.
(2) Convert this animal-hater into an animal-lover. When the complaining stops, the capturing also stops.

As “easy” as it sounds, we believe that little by little, the water jug will be filled.

For every ONE animal-hater that we can convert to become compassionate (or at least, tolerant) towards animals, many animal lives can be saved from capture and abuse. There was case of a lady who used to be intolerant of stray animals, but ever since reading one of my books, her attitude changed and she then allowed her nephew (who lives with her) to adopt one of the stray cats in their back alley. I have also been receiving emails from parents telling me that their children have convinced them to take care of “those stray cats” in the back alley and these parents are actually interested to do it as they see the value in cultivating kindness in their children. Sometimes, it is the children educating the parents, and at other times, it is the reverse, but whatever it is, it is a change of mindset which leads to better treatment of the stray animals.

Here is one such email, from a Mr Wee:

Dear Dr. Chan,
How are you?
My name is Wee, from Shah Alam Buddhist Society.May beyou can recognise me if met, because I had been attending your talk for many times! haha…….
OK, the reason I wrote to you this time is to ask for more info on spay-neuter of cat around my house ( some adopted, some were stray ).
My wife and I always mentioned about you toour 11 years old daughter on your love and compassion toward animals, which inspired her so much to become a veterinarian when she grew up ( that’s what she said ) ! And so, it happened by chance on one day ( beginning of last year )she spotted 3 little kittens in the drain of the backyard of our house. The kittens look so weak and helpless. She asked our permission to get them out of the drain and take care of them, which I reluctantly agreed, but my wife was so touched with her compassionate heart. Since then, the numbers has grown, with many also came from outside. Those cats poo everywhere in my garden, and the smell is really unbearable especially during the hot day. The cost for food and their medical fees also became an extra burden for us.
I told my wife we have to do something to stop this. My daughter is strongly against toletgo those cats. So, we decided at least to do spay-neuter on them, but you know the cost is not so cheap!( I was told it cost min RM200 per cat ).
We knew that youprovide subsidy for this, so we would like to hear from you what shall we doabout it?
Looking forward to hear from you soon.
May you be well & Happy.
Kind rgds,
Wee

Kudos to Mr Wee’s little daughter, Angeline, and also her parents, of course!

So, while we continue to provide medical funds to help the animals and their caregivers and rescuers, we see a great need for education as well.

My books are available for free and the e-books can be downloaded:http://myanimalcare.org/free-books/

If you wish to receive the hardcopies, please write in. We only request that you reimburse us for postage to deliver the books to you. We also request that you pass the book on after reading, since it is a free book. Don’t keep it on your shelf. Please pass it on to another. Or, you could lend it out to others.

Please help us in spreading the word on kindness to animals.

Education is the key to change.

I remember reading the words of a wise man who said that the greatest miracle in the world is not that of magic tricks or mind-reading, it is when an evil man is transformed into a good man.

Let’s make that miracle happen….one by one.

Little by little is the water jug filled.

Have a good week ahead.
