Dear Dr. Chan,

First of all, I am fan of your work. I knew about your organisation
this year & nearly daily I follow your writings in petfinder.

I am writing to share with you about a wonderful lady who lives in
Muar, Johor. Now this is going to be long.  She has been rescuing &
feeding stray cats for years now & a few years back even erected a
shelter for her cats that she rescued.  If by any chance she manage to
trap the cats, she will spay/neuter them, mostly with her own money.
In Muar, people call her the cat lady or mak cik kucing. Some people
even call her crazy lady.

We know her as “Kak Yam”.

Unfortunately her actions have caused people to dump more cats &
kittens, even last time a puppy at her house, much to the chagrin of
the neighbours. She is a Muslim.  But she still takes the puppy in &
made a small enclosure for it.

She is getting older & finally she gave up her government house that
she rented as shelter for the cats last year & sent the cats to an
animal shelter at Pekan Nanas.  She told me she made monthly financial
commitment for her cats to live there.

At her own house she houses 10 more cats.  And she still makes rounds
in Muar at least twice daily to feed stray cats.  All at her own
expenses. However I do believe once in a blue moon some kind people
donate food & cash & help to help her out.

She strongly advocates CNRM & often advise people if they really want
to release their cats to spay/neuter them before doing so & she will
point out places where they can dump their cats, at places where some
kind hearted people will always feed these strays. She even volunteers
to pick their cats for spaying if they do not have the time to do so.

I spoke to her this morning about your organisation. I wish for your
permission to let her have your website add & email add for her to get
in touch with you. If possible your h/p no, so that both of you can
have a chat & find ways to help her out, & you will have a better
picture of her situation.

I do not have her e-mail add but only her h/p no. If you wish to have
her h/p no please let me know. She has always been the one that I turn
to for advises & a shoulder to cry on with regards to cats. I wish
with your assistance, her burden especially financially is lessen.

Thank you for reading this & for any assistance that you can offer.

I communicated with Shaidatul yesterday, through several emails and Kak Yam can certainly apply for our neutering and medical subsidies. According to Shaidatul, Kak Yam is not able to use the computer. But that’s alright, many of the people whom we help are also not IT-literate, but they get someone else to help them. I think our procedures are simple enough:

Question to self: Do you need the subsidy? If you do, please apply.

What we need:

1. Photos and a short write-up, for application.
Once approved, get procedure done, pay vet, get receipt.
2. Post original receipt and duly filled form.
3. Photos again, after procedure.

More about Kak Yam, from Shaidatul:

Kak Yam works with the Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Muar. I have never once asked her real name. My mistake. I have informed her about your request and she said she will try to fulfill your request.  My only concern is that she is not so internet savvy.  Most of the time we communicate via phone. By the way I live in Kulai which is about 2 hours away from Muar.  I met her when I was in Muar.
Noah’s Ark in Pekan Nanas has been helping out Kak Yam throughout the years. Basically they offer neutering and spaying services to strays at a very minimal cost.
Noah’s Ark has helped to neuter/spay a lot of stray cats in Muar brought in by Kak Yam. Sometimes Kak Yam managed to convince cat owners to spay/neuter with them. They will sometimes bring some cat food and medicine for Kak Yam knowing that she feeds and cares for hundreds at a time & also knowing her constraint.  The person-in-charge of Noah’s Ark will occasionally come down to Muar for this purpose.  Will this hinder any assistance to her?
FYI Kak Yam is also helping another old cat lady, who is sick (leg problem) and on welfare(she receives RM300 per month) but is taking care of about 30 cats at her house.  People have been dumping cats dan kittens in front of the house regularly knowing that she will never turn away any strays that are sent to the house. Kak Yam is the one who is running errands for her from getting her meds from the hospital to buying cat food/meds for her cats. Unfortunately all these strays are not vaccinated but Kak Yam will help her spay/neuter but she will foot the bill.
If you ask me, Kak Yam needs help in every way that she can.  From cat food to neutering and medical fees.  She also welcome volunteers who can help her distribute the food to places all over Muar.(her legs are giving her problems). Fostering and adopting also helps although it is kinda unheard for in Muar.  However I will let her tell you personally what kind of assistance that she needs most.

I’ve asked Shaidatul to convey to Kak Yam that we need photographs of the cats for which she wants to apply for medical subsidy.

We will do our best to help all applicants who are in need of help, as long as we still have funds and as long as our procedures are followed.

I’m also looking forward to communicating with Kak Yam.

It’s nice to know another animal caregiver who is doing wonderful work with and for the homeless animals.

If any of our readers have heard about or met Kak Yam, please do share your experience about her work by leaving a comment in this post.
