I joined the RASMA programme in 2022 when the world was still recovering from the emotional and psychological toll of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a medical student studying overseas, I faced prolonged isolation, endless online classes, and growing uncertainty about the future. It was a difficult period, and I struggled with anxiety and a lack of direction. But I knew that staying in that mindset wouldn’t help. I decided to actively seek connection, meaning, and growth, and that’s when I discovered RASMA.

Through RASMA, I volunteered with the Malayan Rainforest Station (MRS) and SEATRU to protect hornbills and sea turtles. Immersing myself in nature and meaningful work with some kind souls was nothing short of transformative. I discovered that whenever I choose to connect, contribute, and channel my energy toward something bigger than myself, life will begin to shift for the better.

During the volunteering period, I had the chance to explore the beauty of Taman Negara, encountering wild elephants, being chased by bees, covered in countless leech bites, and venturing deep into pristine caves. We set up forest camera traps as part of our work to monitor and conserve hornbills. Beyond conservation, we also worked closely with local villagers, helping to build a plough-based self-sustaining planting system, giving housewives in the community a space to grow vegetables and support their families. At SEATRU, my time was equally enriching, patrolling the beach at night, assisting sea turtles as they lay eggs, relocating nests to safer hatching sites, and participating in regular beach clean-ups.
