Pet Cafés: Yea or Nay?

Pet cafés may seem like a dream come true — cute animals you do not usually see, coffee, and cuddles all in one place. Scrolling through social media, it is clear that pet cafés are a growing trend. The cosy aesthetics may seem great for family fun and exposing children to animal interactions, but for the animals, their new ‘home’ could be a place of distress and suffering.

In 2023, the SPCA investigated four pet café cases, including I Love Cat Café, which faced public scrutiny in early 2024. Our visit revealed malnourished cats, inadequate space, poor hygiene, and ventilation. Two cats required urgent veterinary care. While the café aimed to be a refuge, it became a distressing environment for the animals. Thankfully, all seven cats have since been rehomed, and the café has closed.

Before visiting a pet café, consider whether it truly prioritises animal welfare. Your visit isn’t just a one-time experience — it is an endorsement that keeps the business running. Click through for tips on deciding if a café is worth your support.
