Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Tony Lynam and Mike Hicks from EarthRanger.
“EarthRanger provides a real-time software solution designed to help protected area managers, ecologists, and wildlife biologists make data-driven decisions in wildlife conservation. It integrates historical and real-time data from a protected area, including wildlife sightings, ranger patrols, spatial information, and identified threats.”
Thanks to IUCN SSC Asian Species Action Partnership, we had the opportunity to attend the EarthRanger training last year, and we’ve since adopted the app for our turtle conservation (including river patrolling) efforts. The platform’s flexibility allows us to tailor the interface to focus specifically on our conservation objectives, including tracking turtle observations, logging threats (fishing gear, sand mining operations) in the river, and monitoring the movements of our Terrapin Guardians. This security feature, in particular, has been crucial for ensuring their safety amidst the challenges they face in the field.
As we move forward, incorporating technology into our conservation efforts is not just a convenience—it’s a necessity. While traditional methods still have their place, technology enables us to work more efficiently and sustainably, empowering us to do more with fewer resources.
