Public Announcement
We wish to inform the public, that SPCA had a meeting with the MBPP authorities following the furore on the discovery of a black garbage bag containing deceased cats in the MBPP rubbish bin recently. These cats & kittens were all in our ICU area having just been admitted and died of cat flu.
We have now been provided suitable space for the burial of the deceased cats from SPCA Penang with immediate effect.
Please note:
1) Disposal of deceased pets:
In the past, SPCA used the MBPP incinerator to dispose of deceased pets. However the incinerator was closed for our use due to land development nearby, and we were advised to use the MBPP rubbish bins. SPCA tried to apply for a licence to operate our own incinerator , but was turned down due to environmental issues.
2) Euthanasia :
SPCA Penang, since its formation in 1948, has followed RSPCA guidelines on policies. One of the policies is to euthanize humanely stray/abandoned animals and their young ones that were badly injured, sick or with disease.
SPCA Penang has never been nor declared itself as a No-KILL shelter, from the day it was established.
The official Vet Decree of “Do No Evil” includes euthanising of pets to alleviate (reduce) suffering if all other medical treatments do not reduce their suffering.
We have never euthanised the stray/abandoned pets indiscriminately. We no longer collect stray/abandoned pets. All of them are dropped off at SPCA by feeders and owners.
Our catteries are segregated to ensure healthy felines are not in contact with new cats currently under treatment (viral, zoonotic & bacterial, for example cat flu).
This is all done to ensure disease does not spread and clean hygiene is maintained at all times.
Please do visit our catteries and kennels during our office hours to see for yourself the general well-being of these stray/abandoned pets, before casting unwarranted misjudgement.
I appeal for your kind understanding and fairness to the shelter and its staff who are caring for these abandoned pets
Thank you.
President,
SPCA Penang.
