WWF-Malaysia recently supported two initial discussions in Tawau and Lahad Datu, marking the first engagement between stakeholders from both districts and Alterra, the consultant appointed by the Town and Regional Planning Department, to review the district plans for each area.
Some highlights:
From Tawau—The gathering, attended by 14 government agencies and led by Majlis Perbandaran Tawau (MPT), saw MPT emphasize the urgency of completing the district plan to address cross-border dynamics with Kalimantan and the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure the plan’s success.
From Lahad Datu—Chaired by Majlis Daerah Lahad Datu, the session spotlighted the district’s unique potential in tourism, marine eco-tourism (Darvel Bay), and economic diversification. Security concerns and the need to strengthen Lahad Datu’s role as a regional hub were also raised.
Before preparing the district plan, WWF-Malaysia conducted stakeholder consultation workshops and compiled baseline information in The Stakeholder Consultation Document for Tawau-Kunak and Tabin Landscapes. These consultations included SWOT analyses to assess local environmental, infrastructure, and socio-economic conditions. The findings provide a strong foundation for Alterra and local councils, guiding the review process to ensure the district plan addresses each area’s needs and opportunities.
WWF-Malaysia thanks all agencies for their full participation and valuable input, as their involvement remains critical in shaping sustainable development strategies for both districts through these plans.
