Last Friday, our dedicated TCS team, along with Prof. Maketab, the Terrapin Guardians (Wan Mokhtar, Nasir, Hasbullah) and Jabatan PERHILITAN Semenanjung Malaysia, braved the weather for a river survey at Sungai Kuantan. Although we could not set up traps to find river terrapin (thanks to the relentless rain!), we made the most of the day.

We explored potential nesting banks to look for tracks of terrapins, and even came across two active sandmining sites near the sandbanks. Uncontrolled sandmining can severely erode riverbanks, leaving terrapins with fewer safe places to nest—and that is just one of its many impacts ☝🏻

On the bright side, interviews with locals gave us hope! Many shared stories of terrapins being spotted in the area years ago, confirming their presence in this river 🏞️

A huge thank you to everyone who joined and supported this one-day river survey! We are looking forward to calmer skies and safer conditions to continue our efforts after the monsoon season.
