The trend of keeping chickens is growing, and at ACRES, we frequently see welfare cases reported. Before you decide to adopt chickens or already have one, here are some key things to consider:

1️⃣ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐬?

2️⃣ 𝐃𝐨 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫?

Each chicken needs at least 𝟐-𝟑 𝐬𝐪 𝐟𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩 for roosting and 𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 to run, perch, dust bathe and more. Overcrowding can lead to stress, feather loss, and injuries.

Since the 2019 pandemic, pet abandonment rates have risen. Abandoned poultry often suffer injuries, illnesses, and emotional distress, and they can breed with wild populations, leading to noise complaints and culling. Adopt responsibly and never buy any live animals online.
