Alongside Our Colleagues From Wwf-Germany, We Welc..

Alongside our colleagues from WWF-Germany, we welcomed valued partners from Beiersdorf and Evonik, whose support drives our conservation and sustainable palm oil initiatives. Together, we visited the Tabin Landscape, an area vital for wildlife protection, forest restoration, and responsible palm oil production.

Here are some highlights from the trip:

We engaged in important discussions with the Sabah JASPO (Jurisdictional Approach for Sustainable Palm Oil) Initiative and the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) Labour Working Group, on improving labor standards for fair and safe working conditions and strengthening jurisdictional alignment.

We explored the Bagahak Ecological Corridor, a 58-hectare stretch of land set aside for conservation by Sawit Kinabalu, that connects Silabukan Forest Reserve with Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Having supported these efforts since 2022, our visitors were delighted to actively contribute to the restoration by planting trees!

At another project site, BORA (Bringing Back Our Rare Animals) shared efforts to restore banteng (Bos javanicus) habitat. Remarkably, numbers have doubled since the project began in this safe and productive environment, thereby contributing significantly to the conservation of this endangered species.

We visited Kampung Teburi to see the cost-effective yet pioneering early warning system, designed to manage human-elephant conflicts.

Discussions with local cooperatives comprising small-holders and medium-sized growers managing around 1,000 hectares highlighted the potential of sharing premiums between European buyers and Sabah growers to drive RSPO group certification for sustainable palm oil.

The trip concluded with a tour of KLK’s palm kernel crusher mill, a place where a lot of certified sustainable palm kernel oil (CSPKO) is produced, which later becomes manufactured into beauty products, such as Beiersdorf’s NIVEA Creme. Overall, the visit highlighted the power of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals and the essential connection between global partners and on-the-ground efforts in Sabah. A heartfelt thank you to Beiersdorf and Evonik for their continued support and partnership in driving meaningful change.
