From Tough Terrains To Being Chased By A Pair Of B..

🌳💪🏼 From tough terrains to being chased by a pair of Bornean sun bears while setting up a camera trap, Philovenny Pengiran has unforgettable moments from the field. Being the only rose among the thorns back then, she had her fair share of adventures when she led Sarawak’s wildlife conservation team for over a year.
Extreme terrains can be challenging for the team members who risk their lives while working in remote areas with restricted communications. The team also works on engaging with local and indigenous communities to earn their trust and prevent misunderstandings as sometimes conservation efforts are perceived as a threat to their rights to use the natural resources.
Looking back, Philovenny is proud to know that the camera trap she set up captured the first photos of smooth otters (Lutrogale perspicillata) for WWF-Malaysia’s Sarawak Conservation Programme. The smooth otter is categorised as “Vulnerable” in IUCN. In her words, “Passion is the most important when you want to work in conservation. To me, without passion for conservation, it is hard to find peace and satisfaction in the work we do.”
Philovenny is currently the wildlife and habitat conservation senior officer, leading a project on corridor for orangutans conservation in Gunung Lesong-Ulu Sebuyau. 🌳🌿
