I received this a few days ago:
Message:
Greetings,
I am currently working at a pet store in KL. Recently our area is
being occupied by a stray female dog and her two pups. The two pups
are at the back of our store and the mother would go off (so far to
the front of the store)and come back to keep an eye on her babies.
Yesterday one of the pup fell into a deep drain and my colleague
rescued her. My boss is kind and allows us to feed these animals that
is as far as he will go. But my heart goes out to these pups. The
mother is not friendly but the pups are beginning to trust us. They
hang around our shops’ back door, whimpering to get in. My question:
If they are still there and should i want to help what is my first
action? I am not good with reaching out with ppl and explaining the
CNRM concept.
0) is there anyone that can do that for my area?
1) are all strays required for vaccination before being spayed? and do
we have to wait a week before the surgery?
2) can I ask for subsidy for food to get close to the mother, to gain
trust so can catch her? I think she is still nursing.
I would like to do something but I am afraid. Please guide me were to
start.
Thank you.
I explained that it is best to get the mother spayed if the puppies have stopped nursing; the puppies can be adopted (we’ll help publicise but I’ll need photos). And, we do not provided food for such cases, especially when this person works in a petstore.
His reply:
All praise to God, sum1 will be taking the puppies (one of our customers).
I will try and get a photo of the mother-dog asap before the puppies (or mother goes) go away, yes pls help blog it (after i get pic). Or else I will do try it myself i.e. catching her. I just need that catcher-thingi-gadget, do u think the council lend it out?
My immediate plan is to spay and release her as I cannot take care of her. I just hope that little, will help her future, she is a good mother – she’s already thin, the pups are very healthy looking. Reminds me I better ask the man taking them to vaccinate them first. I am curious as to why he wants them as he already is trying to sell other dogs.
Anyway will post update soon.
I was very concerned about the “selling dogs” part, and I urged him to check on this potential adopter before surrendering the puppies to him. The “selling dogs” is very worrying, in view of some underground dog restaurants in the Klang Valley.
And his reply this morning:
Sorry I have another question: can a nursing mother-dog be spayed? Make that a couple more;
Can it be spayed Then vaccinated or need to wait for surgery wound to heal?
Is there anyway we can just catch, spay(heal) and release. I don’t want to wait to do all this till we can re-home, I know that is very difficult. I’m hoping to persuade my boss to use his boarding facility and pay him for it for the shortest amount of time and use, he should be ok with it.
I’m not sure how she suddenly appears in our area when before this no strays were ever around. I doubt if someone caught her and her pups and dropped them off? I’m hoping once her pups are gone she will leave the area but not before i get to her (i.e. spay).
I can’t sleep over this (sigh).
Now, I cannot sleep over this because this person has totally avoided my question about the “selling dogs” part. So I wrote and asked for a response on this issue, and advised him that if the potential adopter is a dog-seller, it is not advisable to surrender the puppies to him until he finds out the adopter’s background and intentions.
I would appreciate our readers’ comments and thoughts on this.
I’m wondering if it would be better for someone or a shelter to take over this entire family.
This may be urgent.
Updates at 9.00am – I have spoken to PAWS over this case and PAWS is willing to take in the whole family. This offer has been conveyed to Hidayah. I hope he will respond.
I have also consulted another animal rescuer who told me about pasar malam dog sellers. Apparently, they buy up or pick up street puppies and sell them at the pasar malam or in their own small petstores. But these puppies are usually not vaccinated and there is also no follow-up on neutering.
The above is only what I’ve heard and may not be applicable to all pasar malam dog sellers.
A reply at 6.30pm:
Sorry I didn’t answer your Q, I was worried last nite, (today is my off day) so early this morning I sms my boss and asked him abt the man who intended to take the pups away. My boss said to relax, he wouldn’t give the pups away to suspicious characters. Though I’ve only worked there since February, I trust my boss and his judgements. I have met this man, he has a farm and he keeps farm dogs and breed dogs too. So I believe the pups will be okay. I’m just worried for the mum now, that she might go away and disappear. Her nipples are all still very full and distended. I just wonder if she has other pups in another location as well.
Tomorrow I’ll get her picture. I’ve asked the organisation MDDB if they have the catch collar. See how that goes.
This is my update so far.
And:
I’ll see the situation tomorrow if the farmer has collected the pups and if mum can still be spotted. I will speak with PAWS and liaise with them about how we can catch the mum and how long before can spay her etc.
