The Malaysian Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Summit was successfully hosted by the Ministry of Economy on 17 and 18 September 2024. It was a platform for stakeholders to converge and share insights on advancing our 2030 Agenda for SDGs.
As part of our commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development, WWF-Malaysia was honoured to participate in the summit’s pocket talk series and the final plenary session. In our pocket talk, we facilitated an engaging board game with Aurecon Lestari, to highlight the importance of sustainable infrastructure. The game encouraged participants to think critically about solutions to environmental challenges.
During the final plenary (Plenary 7), titled ‘Way Forward in SDG Implementation: Rethinking Development Framework’, Ms. Lavanya Rama Iyer, Policy and Climate Change Director at WWF-Malaysia and Co-Chair of the Malaysian CSO-SDG Alliance, highlighted the need to go beyond GDP as a measure of progress. She discussed the limitations of traditional economic growth metrics and stressed the importance of accounting for the true costs of development. The other panellist, YBhg. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia, described ongoing efforts by the Department of Statistics in developing alternative progress indicators. The session was moderated by Mr. Asfaazam Kasbani, Director of Pusat SDG Negara.
The Malaysian SDG Summit was a significant milestone in our nation’s journey towards a sustainable future and we hope that more such events will be held across Malaysia to raise awareness and inspire action.
