Baloo Bluey Under Critical Care (Andy Lews)
While I was at the Bersih Rally, and when we still had reception, I texted Andy twice to ask about Baloo. However, Andy had left his hp behind, so I only managed to call him later, while on the train heading home.
Baloo was in a rather critical state. The X-Rays show fluid in the lungs and this is causing her breathing difficulties.
The vet was not sure what the fluid was and needed to draw some out for testing but told Andy the procedure was a 50-50 case and that Baloo might die.
That was shocking, so I asked Andy not to delay and quickly get a second opinion. I recommended several vets and made some calls, while on the train.
But, Andy and Emily had already sourced a second vet so they were on their on their way to this vet.
To cut long story short, the second vet said it could not be determined what the fluid is unless a test is done on the sample fluid. It could be three things – pus, blood or fluids.
If it is pus, it may be due to an infection which can be addressed using medication.
If it is blood, it may be due to an injury which also can be addressed.
But if it is fluid, it may be FIP and we know that is very bad news.
However, the vet said (according to Andy) that it is not likely to be FIP because FIP normally happens to male cats below 1 year or above 6 years of age.
I never knew that…but of course, I prayed it is not FIP.
How could it be FIP, I wondered. They are completely indoor cats and the environment in the office is so, so clean. But granted, I do not know enough about FIP. I was on the train, and I could not google to check.
Anyhow, the test has to be done. There was no time to lose.
By the time I reached home (praying hard all the way), Andy called to say the fluid is blood.
However, the vet could not determine the source of the blood and it is now a blood clot that is causing the difficulty in breathing.
Baloo has been put on drips and the vet will do everything possible to save her.
Now, there is another problem here. Andy and Emily will be going overseas for a month next week on work duty. Andy is worried that there would be no one to foster Baloo when she is due to be discharged.
I told Andy to take things one day at a time. Let the vet take care of Baloo now first, since she is in critical care and no one can do a better job than a vet.
Mr Teh will liaise with me when Baloo is due to be discharged and we will do our best to find a fosterer to take care of Baloo then.
The vet is in Segambut and that’s quite far away. Should any follow-up be required, it would be a problem.
But let’s only cross that bridge when we come to it.
For now, please pray that Baloo will get well soon.
Get well, soon, Baloo. Please be strong. We are all rooting for you.
