When I took Cow Mau to the vet’s yesterday, I took Indy along too.
I have been trying to settle Indy’s runny nose for more than a week now. It didn’t seem very serious initially, so I gave him Cetirizine. Then I added Bromhexine and the nebuliser (Ventolin should only be used a maximum of 5 days, then it needs rest during which normal saline nebulising can be done). I had Ventolin-ed him for 4 days. I had been giving him Vetri DMG too.
He would get well, on and off, and the runny nose would come back.
But two days ago, he stopped eating on his own. I was still very occupied with Cow Mau’s last stage at that time, so I did not take Indy to the vet’s. I didn’t want to leave the house with Cow Mau alone.
So yesterday, I took Indy along and the vet did a PBF (ear-prick blood check) and found the presence of white blood cells. Indy is fighting an infection.
He didn’t seem so sick, actually, but that’s Indy for you. Always baffling and duping us with his seeming gung-ho nature.
So the vet prescribed Azithromycin for him. I’m to continue the Cetirizine, Bromhexine and nebulisation (four days on Ventolin, then a few days’ rest using normal saline). Vetri DMG to continue, of course.

Indy waiting patiently while the vet examined Cow Mau yesterday.
Indy was diagnosed with (sudden) Stage 4 CKD in September 2023. Before this, his annual blood checks showed that he was okay and there were no tell-tale signs of CKD except for the poor appetite which I mistook as he being fussy. He’s been a fussy eater all his life, so I assume it was there.
He’s been perky all this while, even with Stage 4 and that’s how I managed to persuade our vet to let him go through with the stem cell therapy which is normally recommended only to Stage 1-2 CKD patients. Tabs and Ginger went for it, so I asked for Indy too. I felt I had to give him a chance too. The chances of it working is poor, but there was no harm in trying. It isn’t anything that could harm him. At the very worst, it has no effect, that’s all.
Next month will be the first check-up for Tabs, Ginger and Indy after the January 2024 stem cell therapy.
Indy losing his appetite now is either an effect of the runny nose (“I cannot smell, therefore I don’t want to eat”) or a symptom of the progression of the CKD. He’s losing weight too. But he remains as perky as ever. I can only hope the inappetence is caused by the runny nose. I have given him transdermal Mirtazapine too, but he is still not eating by himself. I have been force feeding him.
But with Indy, he may just want to be force fed just because I had been force feeding Cow Mau. That’s Indy for you.
I hope he gets better soon and his appetite returns.
Indy is 15 years old and has too many medical challenges all his life, from the very day he was rescued from the drain.
