It never rains, it pours.
After Miao was placed in the oxygen chamber this morning, X-Rays were done which showed that Miao also has diaphragmatic hernia. The vet gave her Aminophylline to open up her airways. She did not draw blood as that would be stressful and if she struggles, it could be fatal with a compromised lung.
Her right lung is compromised.
Now, the aim is to stabilise her first.
Meanwhile, the vet needs to determine whether the hernia is recent or already chronic. To do this, we need an accurate history of Miao from her rescue in June last year until now.
According to the caregivers, when Miao was rescued in June 2023, they only noticed a limp and a hunch. After that, she even fought with other cats.
But according to the caregivers’ aunt, she thought Miao looked “deformed” when she first came back to their house. She also concurred on the limp.
The caregivers say that there was no heavy breathing all this while until on 6th May 2024 when they caged Miao to prepare her for spaying on the 9th. It was only while she was caged that they noticed the heavy breathing.
The vet says that the hernia is quite bad as half the lung is compromised. So she really needs to have an accurate history and this information will determine is surgery can be done. If the hernia is chronic, she doesn’t advise for surgery as that would be a lot of adhesion by now.
So the vet asked for any videos taken before 6th May. The caregivers sent 4 videos:
17th Sept 2023 – no visible breathing problems.
29th Feb 2024 – no breathing problems.
24th March 2024 – possibly no breathing difficulties, but tail is obstructing view.
We have not made any decision on the above, but meanwhile, as of 6.10pm now, the vet says Miao seems much better now, having been giving oxygen and she has been moved back to the cage. She is also eating well. Most likely the bronchodilator injection given this morning helped.
Also, it is most likely that the hernia caused her to be dyspnoeic (to have shortness of breath) on the table yesterday, because her lung was already compromised.

Stay strong, Miao!
The caregivers have paid a deposit of RM200 for today when Miao was sent to the clinic. They will be applying for our Medical Aid as this happened concurrently with the attempt to neuter Miao.
It is still a bit of a shock, what are the chances that Miao and Nomi both have diaphragmatic hernia? Nomi’s was due to a fall from the pillar to the flower pot. Miao’s could be due to an injury – when was it sustained, that is a very important question as it would throw some light on whether there is already organ adhesion or not, and whether surgery should be attempted or not.
We still do not have an answer to this. We will wait for the vet’s advice.
