The kind person who fed Chalarm was also blind. So, when Chalarm disappeared for a few days, they began to worry 😥.
When Chalarm reappeared, she had a horrible wound on her right foreleg.
A bone that’s broken in at least two places is called a comminuted bone fracture. It’s the result of a traumatic incident like a road traffic accident. This is what is believed to have happened to Chalarm 🩻💔.
Terrified and in pain, Chalarm was seen by our mobile clinic who determined that she would need surgery, and arrangements were quickly made to transport her to our Phuket hospital. It was a long four-hour journey.
While her front right leg had to be amputated, her front left leg also began to show signs of trouble. Here is what our Dog Hospital Veterinary Manager, Dr. Kate, shared about Chalarm’s current prognosis:
💬“We suspect carpal laxity, but the exact cause is unclear. X-rays [are] unremarkable, no joint inflammation, suggesting the issue might lie in the muscle/tendon unit. While surgery is an option, specifically for shortening the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle, it’s a complex procedure that requires advanced diagnostics and aggressive surgical intervention. I believe conservative treatment—such as exercise, physiotherapy, and sunlight exposure—can help her recover.” 💬
Our veterinary team spends a lot of time with the animals, consulting amongst their team as well as with specialists. Each animal’s unique needs are considered and evidence-based decisions are made to give them the best chance of recovery.
Chalarm is now living at the Gill Dalley Sanctuary, where her rehabilitative care continues🌿🐾. Her care, like so many of the animals here at the Sanctuary, is ongoing. Will you help us to ensure they continue to receive it?

☀️Did you know? Sunshine helps dogs (and cats) synthesise vitamin D, which helps to build strong bones. It’s also a natural pain reliever for bone-related issues, like rickets ☀️.
