Meet Shahriman (@spectacularshah), one of our mentors for RASMA 2024! Want to know more about our Mentor? Check out what he has to share below!
A brief introduction of yourself ?
My first foray into environmental activism is volunteering under Malaysia Youth Delegation back in 2017 talking about climate change policy under UNFCCC and that opened my eyes into the circle of animal conservation , environmental conservation and youth volunteering. Joining RASMA back in 2019 furthered my connection to Malaysia’s environmental scene as well as youth volunteerism where I’ve joined Friends of Bukit Dinding to protect the tallest mountain in Kuala Lumpur . I realised my love of animals and nature ever since watching National Geography on TV3 and with volunteering being more needed within our community , we need youths more than ever to spark change not only for our environment but to ourselves.
Fun experience you would like to share?
I was at Lumut, Perak volunteering for Malaysian Primatological Society under their Macaca Nemestrina Project which studies the behavior of the Southern Pig-tailed macaque in the wild and facilitates conservation. I was the only RASMA volunteer their among two researchers living in the area. We were taught to wear orange coloured shirts as to tell the pack of macaques that we mean no harm which has been taught to them for years.
As me and the researcher were observing these monkeys from a far at a palm oil plantation , comes out an alpha male of the pack named “Voldermort “ which is big buff macaques with a missing nose , I froze like a statue merely a few meters away while the researcher was literally right infront of the alpha male . You can see him trying to scare her out but she remained frozen knowing that these monkeys have the strength to really cause serious injury . It was one of the most intense things I’ve ever had witnessed in the wild.
