Happy Tales Mango Clyde. On Valentines Day This Ye..

HAPPY TALES: MANGO & CLYDE

On Valentine’s Day this year, we introduced the adorable duo and promised an update on their journey. Brace yourself, for their fairytale ending has its fair share of trials and tribulations…

Exactly ten months ago to this date, Jenn & Mike made their first visit to the SPCA. They had seen Mango & Clyde’s adoption profiles and knew they were a bonded pair. But more than that, they were prepared to wait for Clyde who was recovering from ringworm infection, and to see Mango through any health complications as she got older. Mango had only one kidney, which meant a higher risk of early-onset kidney disease and the need for a prescription diet to forestall this. Jenn & Mike previously had a cat with kidney problems and were confident that they could care for Mango. They adopted Mango in time for her to spend Christmas at home, then returned for Clyde in the first week of January.

But the story does not end with their reunion. Jenn & Mike were soon troubled by Mango’s increased pacing, spraying, and vocalisation to the point that Clyde mounted her for mating. Their vet diagnosed Mango as being in heat, despite both cats being sterilised. Mango’s condition is known as ovarian remnant syndrome, whereby some of the ovarian tissue was left behind (more common in cats than dogs due to anatomy). Following a discussion between the private vet and our SPCA vet, it was decided that Mango should first do a blood test for hormone levels instead of turning immediately to surgery. The test came back indicative of ovarian remnant syndrome, and Mango had the tissue safely removed. She has since gained healthy weight while Clyde (big boy that he is) has his diet managed by his pawrents.

Brimming with love, Jenn & Mike say, “It has not yet been a year since they’ve been with us and already we feel like we’ve lived a lifetime with them. Every day is happier than the last with Mango & Clyde. They are such wonderful companions – to one another and now to us.”
