A PLEA AGAINST PET ABANDONMENT

Between July 2022 to June 2023, SPCA Singapore attended to 266 abandoned animals – a sharp increase from a yearly average of up to 70 cases in previous years.

Changing economic circumstances can force us to make difficult decisions. These decisions can impact not just our lives but the lives of those who depend on us unconditionally – our beloved pets.

Throughout the pandemic, many of us found solace and companionship in the eyes of our furry pals. Our pets became our steadfast confidantes, providing comfort and love during the most trying times. Is it then right for us to leave behind those who were there when we needed them most?

They don’t just deserve our love when it’s convenient for us; they deserve it always. The bond we share with our pets is a lifelong commitment to care for and protect those who trust us completely.

To abandon a pet is not only heartless but also a serious offense. Under the Animals and Birds Act, those found guilty of pet abandonment can be fined up to $10,000, imprisoned for a maximum of 12 months, or both. It’s crucial that we remember our duty to them and the responsibility we bear as pet owners.

If you find yourself in a situation where you can no longer care for your pet, there are humane and responsible alternatives available: Reach out to friends, family, and animal welfare groups. While the SPCA is not able to accommodate all surrender requests due to space constraints, pet guardians can responsibly rehome their pets using the rehoming noticeboard at https://spca.org.sg/services/rehoming/.

Pet abandonment is NEVER the answer; it’s a heartbreaking and indefensible action. Let’s recommit ourselves to the well-being of our pets, remembering that they are not disposable, but cherished members of our families. Together, we can put an end to this heart-wrenching problem and ensure that every pet receives the love and care they deserve.
