In the #SoiDog20Years timeline, we’re now up to 2018 🧡
In April of that year, misinformation from local authorities concerning a rabies outbreak in Nakhon Phanom province led to the rounding up of thousands of stray dogs and, out of sheer unfounded panic, the surrendering by their owners of hundreds of pets.
Through no fault of their own, these dogs suddenly found themselves in a cramped and ill-equipped government livestock facility. Eventually, only a handful of cases of rabies were detected, but in poor conditions and overcrowded surroundings, other diseases quickly spread.
Tragically, by the time Soi Dog was alerted, over 2,000 dogs had already died. However, Soi Dog was able to rescue hundreds of surviving dogs and, over a period of time, bring them to the safety of the Gill Dalley Sanctuary in Phuket to be cared for and eventually rehomed.
